KANSAS CITY, MO – The Missouri State Highway Patrol said an accident in Warrensburg on Monday afternoon left two people dead and three others injured.
KCTV reported details of the wreck, which happened on NW US Highway 50 at US-50 Business at about 12:50 p.m.
The MSHP’s investigation found that the driver of a 2018 Chevrolet Silverado, a 16-year-old Warrensburg boy, fell asleep behind the wheel. The teen drove off the right side of the highway, re-entered it, crossed US-50 BUS and went airborne.
The Chevy struck a 2022 Acura RDX that had been stopped at the intersection. The impact sent both vehicles off the road, with the Acura hitting a road sign.
The driver of the Acura, 55-year-old Derek B. Moffett of Erie, Colorado, and a passenger, 83-year-old Patricia L. Moffett of Overland Park, Kansas, died at the scene. Two other passengers in the Acura, females ages 19 and 16, were taken to Research Medical Center with serious injuries. All four people in the Acura were wearing their seat belts at the time of the crash.
The Chevrolet driver, who was not wearing a seat belt, sustained minor injuries.
