News: 2 dead following crash involving stolen vehicle in Independence

INDEPENDENCE, MO – Two people died early Monday morning following a collision involving a stolen vehicle on Interstate 70 in Independence, reports KCTV.

According to police, a Chevrolet Equinox reported stolen out of Kansas City was headed east on I-70 west of Interstate 470 at about 2 a.m.

The driver of the Equinox drove off the roadway just before Lee’s Summit Road. The vehicle then struck a rock embankment and overturned back onto I-70, where it crashed into a Ford F-150 pickup.  Another motorist got out of his vehicle to try to help after the crash but was struck, investigators said.

That person and one occupant of the Equinox were pronounced dead at the scene.  Independence police responded and investigated the incident, which shut down eastbound I-70 in the area for several hours.
