News: Firefighter pleads guilty to manslaughter in Westport collision that left 3 dead

KANSAS CITY, MO – A Kansas City firefighter who was charged in connection with a fatal crash has now pleaded guilty in the case, according to KMBC.

The accident happened Dec. 15, 2021 in the area of Broadway Avenue and Westport Road. Authorities said Dominic Biscari was driving a fire pumper when he went through a red light and collided with an SUV.

Two people in the SUV were killed, 41-year-old Jennifer San Nicolas and 25-year-old Michael Elwood. A pedestrian, 41-year-old Tammi Knight, also died in the incident. Biscari was reported to have been driving 51 miles an hour in a 35 mile per hour zone at the time of the collision.

Biscari pleaded guilty this week after being charged with three counts of second-degree involuntary manslaughter. He was placed on probation for three years and required to follow rules that included community service work, not having contact with the victims’ families and not carrying firearms. He was suspended without pay from the Kansas City Fire Department pending an internal investigation.

Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker released a statement that read in part, “Though this plea will not restore their lives or heal their grief, it demonstrates a level of accountability for the actions of the firefighter who carried a public duty. We also hope this motivates further review of the best and the safest practices for operating public vehicles. Our community requires more care.”
